Tambopata National Reserve
The Tambopata National Reserve, easily accessed through Puerto Maldonado, is in the southwestern part of the Peruvian Amazon. Within its more than one million square hectares, you'll find one of the most biodiverse area of the planet including more than 575 species of birds, 103 types of mammals, 1200 species of butterflies and more than 94 of fish.
Amongs the animals you may spy here include the South American bush dog, the black caiman, the Harpy Eagle and the giant river. And, of course, you will see a variety of colorful parrots and an abundance of monkeys. The flora is also quite diverse and includes more than 1400 types of plants. If you're lucky, you'll get to observe animals that are extinct elsewhere.

Tambopata Eco Lodge
The Tambopata Eco Lodge has space for just 59 guests, making it one of the smaller lodges, and allowing for a more intimate exposure to the surrounding jungle as well as reducing its impact on the environment. Buildings are made to blend in perfectly with the surrounding rainforest.
This lodge, with 30 bedrooms is built inside a private reserve of 2,000 hectares. One wall of each room is opens onto the jungle, allowing you to feel like you are truly immersed in the environment. This lodge is reached in only 45 minutes travel from Puerto Maldonado, making it a good choice for travelers short on time.
Refugio Amazonas has 32 bedrooms which also feature walls open to the jungle. A 3 hour journey from Puerto Maldonado, getting deeper into the jungle will give you an opportunity to see more wildlife. It is built with eco-technology and traditional materials and is an especially good choice for families.
