Puno and Lake Titicaca
Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, is located at 12,500 feet (3,810 meters) above sea level and shared by Peru and Bolivia. It is truly a magical place to visit and accessed on the Peruvian side via the city of Puno, located on the lake's shores. Puno is especially known for the Virgen del Candelabra Festival and Carnival held each February and is famous for its many traditional dances and costumes.
Lake Titicaca is known for many legends, the most famous of which is that it is the birthplace of Manco Capac who, with his sister-wife Mama Ocllo, went on to found the Inca Empire and center it in Cusco, navel of the world. On the lake there are a variety of islands that can be visited where one can interact with the people living there and learn about their cultures. A particular highlight of any tour to Puno are the floating totora-reed islands. Besides the many cultural activities there are also a variety of hikes as well as sea kaying possible.
