Arequipa and Colca Canyon
Arequipa is the second largest of Peru’s cities and has a particularly European feel to it. Unlike Cusco where the presence of the Incas is still strongly evident, the "White City" (as it’s known due to the white sillar stone buildings) is all colonial. When you travel to Arequipa, you will understand what a diverse culture the country has.
With all of the cafes, restaurants, as well as some of the best Alpaca clothing you can find, Arequipa is a great place to enjoy the best a city can offer in a setting that is far more tranquil than fast-paced metropolitan Lima.
The Colca Canyon
Arequipa is also the jumping off point for tours to Colca Canyon, an awesome natural structure that is twice as deep as the perhaps better known Grand Canyon. For the more actively inclined, it’s possible to take a short but intense trek here. For those preferring something a bit more sedate, one can take a Colca Canyon tour on which you will spend the night in Chivay where there are some relaxing hot springs. Along the Colca tour you will also stop for a chance to see the impressive Andean condor in its native habitat.
