The Amazon River and Iquitos
Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon and can only be accessed by plane or water. It experienced a boom in the 19th century due to the rubber industry as is reflected in the 19th century mansions that are still evident. It's the place that you need to start from when planning Peru Amazon tours in the north. It's also an interesting place to spend a few days soaking up the history and visiting some of the city's many bars and restaurants.
There are two reserves that can be accessed via Iquitos: the National Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve and the National Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. The former is closer to the city while the other spans five million acres of wetlands, swamps, lakes and lagoons. This is where you'll want to go to see the legendary pink dolphin, among other types of wildlife.
You have some choices on how you want to experience the Amazon, either staying at a lodge or taking an Amazon river cruise. Among the activities you can engage in besides wildlife and bird observation are visits to native communities, fishing and water-skiing.
