Waterfall in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz de la Sierra, commonly known as Santa Cruz, is the capital of the Santa Cruz department in Eastern Bolivia. Covering a vast expanse of area extending from the Andes to the boarder of Brazil, much of it is rainforest. It is also the richest and most populated city in Bolivia, offering an enormous variety of attractions such as parks, the incredible archaeological ruins of Samaipata and for those who crave architecture and history, the Jesuit Mission Route.

The Jesuit Missions Route

Arriving here in the 17th Century, the Jesuits' purpose was to build the "City of God" and preach to the local population. Traveling to the missions is a trip back in time, entering into a clandestine world that remained isolated for over two centuries. Following the route, you can find villages still full of life and the population still frequenting the majestic churches and missions of three centuries ago. In 1991, UNESCO declared the Jesuit missions part of the "Cultural Patrimony of Humanity."
